Oncology rehabilitation physiotherapy is a specialised form of physical therapy aimed at helping people with cancer improve mobility, manage symptoms, and enhance quality of life before, during, and after cancer treatment. It can support recovery from surgery, strengthen muscles, reduce fatigue, and help restore functional abilities.
Individuals undergoing cancer treatment, recovering from surgery or radiotherapy, or experiencing side effects such as weakness, fatigue, pain, swelling, or mobility issues can benefit from oncology rehabilitation. Therapists tailor the programme to each patient’s unique needs and recovery goals.
Oncology rehabilitation physiotherapy can help with issues including post-treatment weakness, fatigue management, muscle strengthening, balance and core stability, lymphedema (swelling due to lymph fluid), breathing exercises, and recovery from nerve or functional limitations linked to cancer or its treatment.
For lymphedema, physiotherapy uses techniques like manual lymphatic drainage, soft tissue mobilization, compression therapy, therapeutic exercises, and patient education to reduce swelling, improve flexibility, decrease pain and restore function in affected limbs.
While a referral from your oncologist can be helpful, it is not always required to begin oncology rehabilitation physiotherapy. At CAPAAR, therapists assess your condition and work with you and your medical team to create an appropriate rehabilitation plan tailored to your needs.
